Critical Illness - Medical Conditions Covered ( O - S )
Occupational Injury - HIV
Contract Terminology
Infection with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) after the effective date of this coverage, resulting from accidental injury that occurred in Canada and exposed the client to HIV contaminated blood or bodily fluids during the course or his/her normal occupation.
Payment under this condition is subject to the following:
- The accidental injury must be reported to the Company within 14 days.
- An HIV blood test must be taken within 14 days of the accidental injury and the result must be negative.
- An HIV blood test must be taken between 90 and 180 days after the accidental injury and the result must be positive.
- The accidental injury must have been reported, investigated and documented in accordance with workplace legislation and regulations.
Exclusions:
No benefit is payable for:
- HIV infection resulting from or transmitted by any other means including buy not limited to sexual activity or recreational drug use.
- If the client has elected not to take any available licensed vaccine, offering protection against the HIV that becomes available prior to the accident.
- Where a licensed cure against HIV has become available prior to the accident.
Specifics: Declaration formalities are required to ensure that the HIV was contracted through the person's occupation.
Parkinson Disease
Contract Terminology
A degenerative brain disease causing muscular rigidity, trembling and slowing of movements.
Exclusions:
The other parkinsonian syndromes are not covered.
Specifics:
There is no known cause for this disease. Any types of parkinsonism resulting from a know cause (example certain drugs, toxic chemicals products or an injury) are not covered.
Paralysis
Contract Terminology
Paralysis resulting in complete and permanent loss of use of 2 or more limbs without interruption for a period of 90 days.
Exclusion:
All psychiatric causes are excluded.
Specifics:
Any permanent type of paralysis of 2 limbs or more, whether it is caused by accident or medical reason, is covered. It may take some time after the accident or illness to determine the full extent of recovery and this may be hampered by other sustained injuries. A waiting period of 90 days is reasonable in order to determine whether the paralysis is permanent or not.
Stroke (Cerebral vascular accident, CVA)
Contract Terminology
Any cerebral vascular accident (CVA) producing neurological impairment and resulting in paralysis or other measurable neurological deficit and persisting for at least 30 days following the occurrence of the stroke.
Exclusion:
Transient Ischemic Attacks (TIA) are specifically excluded.
Specifics:
The cerebral vascular accident may be caused by haemorrhage (bleeding into the brain), thrombosis (blood clotting in a brain artery blocking it) or embolus (usually a clot from elsewhere in the body, carried in the blood stream and blocking a brain artery). Strokes usually cause permanent damage which may improve considerably over time.
